Who We Are
When people venture to Louisiana their adventures are typically preceded by high expectations for their taste buds. The food should be spicy, the music should include washboards, and alcohol of all types should flow in responsible abundance. Natives and visitors alike know that a good time is in store as soon as the “Bienvenue en Louisiane” sign comes into focus. The laid back attitude of the Boot State is nothing less than commonplace.
What hasn’t always been so commonplace in Louisiana is a craft beer industry to rival the culinary creativity of the state. However, the growth in recent years is nothing less than extraordinary, and the brewing company that accelerated the craft popularity is none other than Abita. Its humbled beginnings in 1986 have exploded into a widely recognized and appreciated brewing company. It’s the 14th largest craft brewer in the country, and several other brewing companies have followed suit along the bayous of Louisiana.
Currently, the state boasts 7 craft brewing companies. Bayou Teche Brewing, located in Arnaudville, and Parish Brewing Company in Broussard represent true Acadiana flavors and the soul of the heritage that has made Louisiana famous—Cajun. Tin Roof Brewing Company is the only brewery located in the capitol, Baton Rouge, while Covington Brewhouse, Chafunkta Brewing Company and Abita are located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Covington, Mandeville, and Abita Springs respectively. NOLA Brewing is, naturally, located in the heart of the Crescent City where Jazz and Mardi Gras rule.
Where did the increase in craft breweries spark from? One could say that the national trend has something to do with the increase, but another solution can be found easily. Louisiana prides itself on the culture of its people and the cuisine that is unique to the Pelican State. There was a necessary push to create brews that would complement the tastes of each traditional meal. The talented brew masters at each brewery have done just that, and they have brought the flavor of life in Louisiana out even more thanks to their concoctions.
